In Plants vs. Zombies, players will select plants (and mushrooms) and place them around the house (different areas each level) to confront and defend the homeowner (player) from zombie attacks. Many plants can only attack the row they are in, but there are some that can attack up to 3 rows at once (for example Threepeater). Zombies always enter the game area and walk in one of the rows (unless they bite the garlic they will switch rows). In the game, there is a lawn mower and pool cleaner (on the backyard level) at the far left of the yard that can destroy all the zombies in the row, but they cannot be reused until the next level. Most zombies will eat the plants they encounter (although there are also types of zombies that jump over, destroy, and fly over plants).
Players start by selecting and planting pre-selected plants and seeing what zombies there are. New plants can be obtained at the end of the level. To plant plants, players must collect sun points that come from sunflower plants or from the sky. Each plant is assigned a price. Most plants can be eaten easily by zombies. Mushrooms need to be awakened with coffee beans if used at day level. Plants need to be planted on lotus flowers (except water plants) if they are to be planted in water and need to be planted in flower pots to be planted on the roof. There are many types of plants with their own abilities, there are plants that can shoot their projectiles at zombies, produce sun or directly kill zombies by burning them, crushing them, or eating them.
There are also various types of zombies, some are strong, walk fast, can instantly destroy plants, are able to fly with balloons, some are even able to dance like Michael Jackson (replaced with disco zombies in the “Game of the Year” version) who can emit another zombie from underground. There is a progress level at the bottom of the screen. Every big wave, many zombies appear at the same time and when the wave ends, there are zombies that appear from the pool, grave or are placed by the zombie bungee.
